.HOW TO MAKE EXTENSION ROD LOCKING KNOBS for MicroTechnical large format Cameras MkVI, MkVII and S92.
MADE OF SOFT ALUMINIUM they are made as a single piece designed to fail first in the event of a camera being dropped or knocked. This prevents damage to the body of the camera and possibly an expensive repair.
A TEMPORARY REPAIR may be effected by removing any remaining stub of damaged thread, drilling through the knob then fitting a 2BA nut and bolt. Set the bolt in the body of the knob with epoxy resin adhesive. The exposed thread must be at least 12mm long.

- METHOD - 1. With the aluminium rod in a lathe mark it at 3 points corresponding to middle and ends of the knob using a V shaped tool (A). Items (B) are stop blocks for repetitive manufacturing and not required for 1 offs. 2. Turn down the end to 4.7 mm diameter. (C). 3. Run a 2BA die up the end to form a thread (D). 4. Using a knurling tool, knurl the knob. (E). 5. Smooth the knurled part to remove any roughness and clean up the thread next to the body of the knob. 6. Part off the knob (F). |
