LLOYD, ENGLAND LLOYD & LLOYD LONDON CAMERAS

From time to time large format cameras have appeared bearing the brand names Lloyd, Lloyd London and England Lloyd. These so far have been 5 x 4 cameras identical to early MicroTechnicals (Mk's I - III) but little else is known. Only six have been noted during the entire life of the Club and we seek more information. Information known thus far is given below.

December 2007. This subject is currently undergoing further research by the Club and will be updated as more information comes to light. If you own a Lloyd camera please feel free to get in touch. We look forward to hearing from you.

MPP Mk II MIcroTechnical - Similar to Noted Lloyd Cameras

It seems likely that MPP manufactured cameras and sold them to a U.S. dealer, importer or retailer who then re-badged them using the Lloyd brand name. This name could have been their own trade name and the company is thought to be Andrew J. Lloyd & Co. of Boston, Massachusetts. It seems likely that some of the England Lloyd cameras were supplied by MPP Ltd ready badged as the lettering is engraved in the base between the two rails similar to the MPP cameras. The engraved lettering was finished red.

Another maker thought to have supplied cameras to Andrew J. Lloyd & Co. is the Ray Camera Co. in New York, around 1900. For more information go to the Links page and click Historic Cameras where further information on Ray products is given.

In addition, the Lloyd name has been used by several companies including Fred Lloyd of Liverpool, England who produced a field camera around 1910. It has also been used by various German firms and a Lloyd sub minature camera was made in Japan but it is only the U.S. company the club is interested in.

One camera appeared at the Ebay online auction site and another at a photographic dealer in New York, both early in 2001, serial numbers unknown. Other examples of MPP/Lloyd cameras have been noted at serial numbers 135x, 144x and 160x, the latter being in the UK whilst the others in the USA.

Graphic Type Viewer on a Lloyd Camera

Kalart type Rangefinder

The top picture is of a MPP MicroTechnical Mk II, 5 inch x 4 inch camera and is believed similar to the Lloyd examples. Some variations with the Lloyd cameras have been noted, one having a Kalart type rangefinder ( possibly a Focuspot ) on the right side and another with a Graphic type viewer on the top at the users right.

For more detailed information on early MicroTechnical cameras please visit the Product Index page then select the MicroTechnical & S92 page.

The MPP Users' Club is keen to discover more about Lloyd and Lloyd London cameras as we have no information other than that stated on this page.

If you are able to throw light on the subject, have such a camera, or know someone who does please send an email with as much information as possible.
