LATERAL ADJUSTMENT OF RANGEFINDERS - manufacturers instructions as published for S92 camera.

PLEASE NOTE - To ensure rangefinder accuracy MPP supplied each lens with its own rangefinder cam plate. Both carry an identical serial number. Calibrating a rangefinder can only be carried out properly when the camera is fitted with such a combination.

The coupled rangefinder is adjusted for use with the particular camera and lens to which it is fitted when it leaves the factory. However, there are two conditions where re-calibration might become necessary:-

(1)

The fitting of a new lens (although of the same focal length), or damage to the camera or to the rangefinder.

(2)

Lateral image adjustment.

With regard to sub para (1) above this adjustment can only be made by the manufacturers. (Website reminder ... MPP closed in 1988)

If the camera has received a slight blow, correction of the lateral shift may be required. Using care, the necessary calibration for this can be made by anyone with an elementary mechanical knowledge, as described below.

Lateral Adjustment (fig 18).

MPP drawing from an S92 handbook.

The camera must be firmly fixed to a tripod or bench during any adjustments to the rangefinder. In the event that the two images cannot be brought into coincidence because of lateral shift the correction is made as follows:-

(1)

Focus the camera at 7 yards (measured from the ground glass screen to the object).

Note.. When focussing, it is essential that the small field in the rangefinder is in the exact centre of the large one.

(2)

Remove the rangefinder cover screw.

(3)

Insert a watchmakers screwdriver through the aperture, making sure to select the correct screws and not the fixing screws located below. For this reason it may be necessary to illuminate the screwheads by a spotlight through the eye piece of the rangefinder. Viewing through the rangefinder at the object focussed, turn the screws very slightly ; clockwise rotation will move the image to the right, anticlockwise to the left. It is essential when making this adjustment to turn each screw a similar amount.

(4)

After completing, put back the cover screw.

Note.. It may be found necessary when performing this adjustment to remove the rangefinder cover. To do this, remove the four screws, one at each corner of the rangefinder, and carefully lift off the cover.

Cleaning windows and mirrors.

Climatic and atmospheric conditions may cause the windows to become clouded. The film can be removed from the surface of the glass with "Selvyt" cloth or lens tissue. Clean carefully and rub gently to avoid disturbing the position of the mirrors or damaging their surfaces.
